If passed, the garage sale will be scheduled for 2020 because the holidays are upon us. Date of garage sale TBA once a resolution is approved.
3—Potluck on Dec 15, Dante Fascell Park. On the issue of corporate food sponsorships: the potluck is not a venue for this.
Task: Have info at the potluck to encourage growing membership in South Miami Neighbors ($15 per family) &sponsorships on projects: SoMi Rainbow Underline/ Alternative to College Fair/ Candidates Forum
Think about and prepare a more formal sponsorship to ask for participation in the future. Develop a procedure/guidelines.
|
5—Tentative date for Candidates Forum: Monday, Jan 27, 2020, is available at the Elks Club (the venue for the last Forums). Fabian is our go-to guy. This year if we wish to have food (which is optional), the cost for cleanup is $200 (non-negotiable). Do we wish to forego food?
6—Emily Gorman, representing the Sierra Club discussed the Ready for 100 Campaign, Readyfor100.org. South Miami has committed to 100% renewable energy by 2050. The city has submitted a $300,000 grant proposal to the SE Sustainability Directors Network and will learn if they will receive it by the end of November. It will be used for implementation and consulting related to the 100% Renewable commitment and other citywide sustainability efforts. If they get the grant, the goal for the next 2 years will be to set its implementation plan. (6 cities already implementing this.)
Having open communication with the community, understanding the needs and the wishes of the residents is vital to the success of the program. The South Miami Neighbors could play an important role in the communication process. Helping to identify the needs and wishes of residents, organizing with other community organizations to tap into other groups of residents and tirelessly requesting/demanding from the city to recognize what residents want and updates on their decision making and progress. We could also help organize listening sessions and bringing in experts from other cities farther along in the process.
Gray will contact the City Manager to set up a meeting to ask what is the city’s timeline for this program and how they plan to keep the residents informed. Holly will join her for the meeting.
--can be a topic for discussion at Candidates Forum & a component for Lovable Cities discussion (Holly offered to host a potluck dinner on May 6th or 7th 2020)
--How can we cut electricity consumption? Seal doors, windows, roofing, plant trees, add insulation (program in place in CRA to insulate houses)
--FPL customers can organize; sign up for a purchasing program (Solar Together)
--There are 2 bills in Tallahassee targeting 100% renewables statewide
--Gray hopes the grant includes newsletter w topics: recycling, composting
--Idea: CRA as the pilot area because it includes public housing, private residences with onsite solar
7—This year let’s get out there and participate in Give Miami Day, on Nov 21, https://www.givemiamiday.org. And a thought: If we participate annually we can make our membership day concurrent w Give Miami Day. Update, need a real website and not a blog. We might need to budget for that in the coming year.
South Miami Neighbors Meeting September 23, 2019
In attendance:
Donald Jackson
Cornelius Harrington
Gray Read
Holly Zickler
Annick Sternberg
Mari Chael
Bruce Baldwin, Mayoral candidate
Philip Stoddard, Mayor
Upcoming projects for South Miami Neighbors:
- Citywide Garage Sale: RECYCLEFEST (or may choose another name)
- November 9
- Point persons: Holly Zickler, Mari Chael
- Somi Neighbors plan to organize a citywide garage sale and are investigating the possibility of free garage sale permits to residents for the event since currently it looks like there is a $20 fee. More than one member of SMN remembered that South Miami offered each resident one garage sale for no cost per year. Perhaps, we can tap into that?
- SMN would like to collect a $15 fee to be part of a garage sale map and advertising promotion for the event. This would be used to restart our dues paying and as a fundraising event.
- One idea is that the city establish an annual fee-free Garage Sale Day, Phil may bring that up in the next council meeting
- Potluck Block Party at All America Park
- Point person: Becca Lago
- November 10
- Becca is investigating permit option and if we might need one. She has also collect and created a group of 15 enthusiastic volunteers to help with the event.
- Mari suggested that we encourage participants from the garage sale to come to the potluck and bring an unsold item to be exchanged.
- Candidates Forum
- Jan 2020
- Point persons: 100% board participation
- We need to get the word out and develop a committee
- Alternative to College Fair
- Jan-April 2020 estimated
- Point persons: Laurie Kahn, Holly Zickler, Donald Jackson
- Laurie and Holly are working on the application for the Community Center Gym as the venue
- Donald suggested contacting a couple of schools specializing in building trades to have tables at the event
- Many thanks to Holly Zickler for her Family Foundation’s generous $2,500 contribution to the South Miami Neighbors to benefit the Alternative to College Fair!
- Contact from Zak Cosner of the Grants and Sustainability office about listing South Miami Neighbors as a partner on the Southeast Sustainable Communities Fund $300K grant currently pursued by the city.
- South Miami Neighbors endorsed the partnership with City of South Miami for the application. The Southeast Sustainable Communities Fund $300K grant will enhance and coordinate the following projects:
- The $100,000 weatherization grant to reduce energy use and energy bills for families in our low-income community that need it the most.
- The proposed education and outreach project to give families the information they need to make their homes safer and more efficient. The Neighbors will work with the City to distribute this information and help advance sustainable practices throughout our community.
- The CRUNCH TEAM Project, currently collecting data on food, water and energy use to contribute to a worldwide research project on building a resilient future This will help other communities in their planning process.
- Gray will draft a letter of support from SMN for the grant
- Bruce Baldwin attended the meeting, shared a little about his interest in running for mayor and was interested in learning more about the projects we were focusing on.

1—Bank account: First American Bank account is awaiting the (nonprofit) tax id number. First American Bank requires no min balance and monthly fees. Unanimous vote to have Holly, Ebru and Fabian research the merits of being a charity or HOA nonprofit, etc. Once nonprofit status is granted, we are committed to filing annual returns (or risk invalidation of nonprofit status):
We have about a two-week timeline for this research, as First American Bank will hold the account number for only a month.
