First Confirmed Locally Acquired Dengue Case in Miami-Dade County in 2013
Miami, August 23, 2013 - Today, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County has issued a mosquito-borne illness advisory for Miami-Dade County. The first locally acquired Dengue Fever case in 2013 has been confirmed in an 18-year-old male.
Symptoms of Dengue Fever may include headache, fever, fatigue, dizziness, weakness, pain behind the eyes, joint pain, and confusion. Health care providers should contact their county health department if they suspect an individual may meet the case definition for a mosquito-borne illness. Miami-Dade County Mosquito Control and the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County continue surveillance and prevention efforts and encourage everyone to take basic precautions to help limit exposure by following the department of health recommendations.

New City Manager to be sworn in Tuesday
South Miami's new City Manager, Steven Alexander, will be formally sworn in at city hall in a ceremony on Tuesday, August 19, at 7pm. The public is invited to welcome Mr. Alexander, who began work on August 1, and whose successes (so far) include securing a $1.2 million federal grant to complete construction of the Murray Park Pool and working toward resolving a $26 million law suit in which the city was named as defendant.

United Teachers of Dade is organizing a back-to-school event August 17
United Teachers of Dade has organized a Back to School Megafest on Saturday, August 17, from noon to 4pm. The event will be held at FIU's U.S. Century Bank Arena, and will feature free activities for kids, give-a-ways, free blood pressure and glucose screening, free vision screening, and a chance to meet Michael Baiamonte, the voice of the Miami Heat.
